Question:

Rear axle of my car is completely loose?

Hi, I have a 99 Ford Mustang (6 cylinder), and while I was replacing the brake disc, I noticed that the left rear axle is completely loose; in other words, if you were to pull on the brake disc with your bare hands, the axle would come all the way out of the differential assembly. This can be extremely dangerous if a tire breaks lose on the road. What could be causing this? Could it be a missing clip, gasket, bearing???? How can I fix it? I would like to get a general idea before I send it to the mechanic next week. Thanks!

Answer:

It is, and it isn't. It can pop at anytime. Just get a used one
If its disc brakes then the only thing that holds the rotor on is the lug nuts and wheel. Its perfectly normal for it to move. If its the front then you have a bad bearing
Wow, never heard of one like this, but if you say so, tow the car to a mechanic shop and fix the differential, there's something really wrong with the gears.
I can't believe it but u guessed it! It's the clip at the inner shaft. Use a mechanic that offers a guarantee and have the ring gear inspected and have them put in new clips. 100 to 200 bucks. If the outer wheel barring had gone out there would be gear oil everywhere.
