Question:

Recalled Toyota accelerator cable?

Could someone tell me if I am understanding this correctly. Do the recalled Toyota's for stuck gas pedal problems have an actual mechanical accelerator cable or is this strictly an electrical cable? I understand all the electronics to control emissions but an electrical cable for this is not a good design idea.

Answer:

it its called electronic throttle control there is no cable. that is why they are having so much trouble fixing the cars, because they cant find the source of the problem.
I understand all the electronics to control emissions but an electrical cable for this is not a good design idea. And why not? Do you not realize that every electronic common rail injected diesel engine ever made is by-wire throttle? If by-wire were the problem then every electronic CRI diesel engine built would have a problem. This includes Ford Power Stroke, Chevy Duramax, Dodge Cummins, VW TDI, etc. They are by-wire because there is literally nothing to hook a cable to. Toyota's problem was first the mats and then an APA supplied for the US made vehicles by CTS which is a US company. They decided that it would be a good idea to have 2 pieces of the same kind of plastic rub together to simulate the natural friction that a mechanical cable has and as a result bad things happened. If you have a CRT computer monitor with a plastic swivel base sitting around try to smoothly adjust the tilt of the monitor. You will find it hard to do as the plastic will want to grab and jump instead of moving smoothly. APA accelerator pedal assembly
I agree that it's not a good idea. It's necessary for things like traction control, but I think a good form of traction control is lifting your foot off the gas. wondering, you always give the example of diesel engines being controlled by an electronic throttle. This may be true, but the difference is, they're not some Japanese company trying to take over the entire world with no regard to quality. And you can't say that since all cars have electronic throttles, Toyota's throttle can't cause problems. Electronic ignition is a good thing, right? How come in '75 GM's and Chrysler's systems worked great, but Ford's and AMC's failed constantly? Just get over this Japanese superiority bullcrap and admit that Toyota is not perfect and never has been.
