Question:

recalls on a honda accord transmissions?

so i have a honda accord 03 v6. my transmission is slipping out of gear and i know its serious i had read somewhere that there was once a recall on these transmissions. wanted to know if it was true. it has 188,000 miles on it also wondering would that be an issue or not

Answer:

Recall Date APR 15, 2004 Model Affected 2003 HONDA ACCORD Description ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE. Consequence GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. Remedy ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. OWNERS OF THE ACCORD VEHICLES WILL START RECEIVING LETTERS ON JUNE 28, 2004, AND ON JUNE 29, 2004, FOR OWNERS OF THE TL AND CL VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238. Potential Units Affected 1099796 Notes HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.) P30/P31 doesn't state for the v6 or not but worth a try
1998 - 2002 Honda Accords had automatic transmission issues. Especially the V6s. If the transmission is still the original, make sure to change the Transmission fluid every 18 months. If it is a V6, when was the transmission overhauled last?
there was the recall that the other respondent posted but that was not for your 'slipping' problem; that was for an overheating condition that could cause a gear inside the transmission to break and lock up the transmission. you are asking about the extended transmission warranty on the V-6 model Accords and Odysseys from 1999 to 2001. Those transmissions had a big problem with slipping and Honda extended the warranties on them to 107,000 miles or 7 years. That program is over and Honda isn't offering any assistance with repairs on those vehicles any longer. The 2003 model supposedly had been modified to eliminate the cause of the transmission problems that the 1999-2001 models had. I understand there were actually 3 engineering changes made and honestly, the 2003 model still had problems (my son's 2003 V-6 coupe had a trans failure at 100k). Honda won't help pay for the repair at 188k as that is over 5 times the length of the original warranty on the transmission. check with your Honda dealer about the cost of a replacement (remanufactured) transmission. That cost may be a decision maker on whether you decide to repair the car or get out of it. THe least expensive alternative is to get a used transmission installed by an independent shop but that will be at least $1200-1500 and you don't know what you're getting. hope that helps
