scorched my carpeting. the lamp cord had a split and it broke leaving black scorch marks on my carpet.
Scissors. Give your carpet a bit of a haircut. The scorch marks are actually burns and will not come off, the burned fibers will need to be removed.
If it is bad call a carpet installer and he can take a piece from your closet and replace the burnt spot and you will not see it. I have done this in many apartments for people so they do not have to replace the carpet. do not wait to long to do it. you want it blend in asap. the carpet from your closet is going to be in better shape at first. if it is a little spot you can cut some edges in the closet and rough up the carpet with a wire brush and glue the carpet clippings in place ( only if small area very small ) I recommend a carpet guy he will have the wright tools and materials needed and it will not be expensive. Probably less then 50.00
First be thankful this damaged lamp cord did not start a fire! Then take some small shears and cut the pile that is damaged. If the damage is too big and cutting the pile would leave a bear spot, see if you have an extra piece of the carpet (can take it from a closet) and do a carpet patch. If properly done they are almost invisible.
If the carper has long enough fibers, try clipping off as much of the scorched part as possible. If the mark is severely burned, then you could cut out the bad part with a utility knife. Remove a piece from say, under the sofa and replace with a 'plug' from there. No one will know except you. If reselling your home with this minor damage is a concern, consider that the new owner will probably want to replace the carpet anyway. If you keep the home, you can always replace the carpet. Is the scorch mark in a area where you could lay a throw rug? Depending on where the scorch mark is, you might consider partial tiling. As by the entry ways.
The only way you can remove the scorch marks off the carpet is to clip the black scorch marks off. Very carefully so you don't clip more than you need to clip. Hopefully it was across the top part of the carpet threads. When we had our carpets installed the installer told me to correct some threads that pop out is to clip on them rather than try to pull them out. So when you think of it I guess it is about the only way you can fix the scorched problem. If it is more than just scorched you can replace a small area with an other piece where it doesn't show or matter. Best of luck to you and hope you only need clipping.
