I'm trying to put on a cherry bomb exhaust and I've ran into a road block. There is an extra pipe running out the side of the cat. Can I just lop it off or do I need to do anything special. Historic plates no emissions check. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oil heat is a good way to heat a house. If you have some mechanical skill you can also do most of the maintenance work on an oil furnace as well. Newer oil furnaces are quiet efficient. Most fuel oil suppliers offer various payment options for filling your tank. A full tank costs several hundred dollars, so you can spread it out. They will also try to sell you rate plans. This can be good if oil costs go up, as you are locked at a set rate. If oil prices go down, you will lose money as compared to having no plan.Any forced air heating system needs to be balanced. Often this is not done correctly. If you can find someone who has lots of know how on forced air systems. Take them to the house and let them take a look. Often people add rooms or convert attics and install extra vents that totally screw up the system. This can even be dangerous, causing the furnace to starve for air on the cool air return side. The results of that will mostly be less heat per gallon of oil, or in the worst case, carbon monoxide/dioxide that can kill you. The result is a smokey burn, instead of a nice hot and clean one.Any fossil fuel burning home should have a carbon monoxide/dioxide detector for safety, just in case. Even if you have a brand new system. Contractors screw up every minute of the day somewhere. The best duct work is as short as possible, with the fewest bends. This also applies to the cold air return side as well. This is not rocket science, search the net, or better yet go to a library. Books list the source of the info. On the net any moron or business looking to sell you stuff, can spout off on any topic. For most of us, buying a house is the biggest investment you ever make. Try not to screw it up. Buying a house with a crazy butt furnace will bite you in the bum big time. Take your time and learn about furnaces and air conditioners. A heat recovery ventilator is a good thing to have added into the mix too, so learn about that. Good luck, Phil
