Favorite Heavy Metal band would be Iron Maiden, and really, if you're just starting out with Metal, you can't go wrong with Maiden. Favorite band in the general Metal spectrum is Opeth, who are a good starting point for Death Metal.

Dio, Black Sabbath, Helloween, Magnum, Saxon, Dokken, Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest, WASP, Iron Maiden, Mot?rhead, Accept, Ratt, M?tley Crue, Guns 'n' Roses, Van Halen, Kiss, Europe, Dare, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, Trash, Mercyful Fate. More heavier older bands: Slayer, Exodus, Pentagram, Sodom, Saint Vitus, Kreator, Death Angel... Ugh there are a billion bands. These should give you something of a metal inspiration.
