I would think there has to be. In the city where I live if you rent property out there has to be a working smoke detector in every bedroom installed 6' away from the door and another 6' away outside the door. There must also be on every level of the house including basements and attic's. If your landlord won't install them, do it yourself. Smoke alarms are not expensive and if one saves a life it's money well spent.
