If the carpet is fairly clean you can use just plain water. It won't leave any soapy residue that will eventually attract dirt. If there are spots, clean them first with Carpet Science, an S.C.Johnson product. You'll be very happy with the results.
You can use cleaners like fabuloso, pine sol, fantastic, **** and span, in small amounts. Use the floor dilution. You can also dilute laundry detergent and use that, but you might have to go back over it and rinse it. I'd recommend getting a carpet cleaner. I really like hoover's pet odor formula, even if you don't have pets, it really makes the carpets clean, smell great and repel stains.

I have been in the same situation before! I have used a good sented pine-sol and a cleaner called faboluso. It worked pretty good and the smell was wonderful.
