Question:

Shiny black dirt in Virginia?

I found some dirt that had pieces of really shiny black pieces, which looked like obsidian, some pieces that looked like gold, (which I doubt they were), and weird pieces that were somewhat greenish. The rest looked kind of sandy to me, and it was very soft, just like sand. Do you have any idea what this could be? I find it kind of odd that I found this in Virginia, where the dirt is red clay...

Answer:

No, it wasn't made for a chimney liner insulation; it is used to grow plants. Papaw
you better use the regular insulation for liners. won't expand or burn.
Vermiculite is an Excellent Insulation , and has been used many times when a closed fire is installed.
isnt vermiculite made with asbestos? if so would you put it anywhere you may breath it?
