it's probably residue from the gas.it's got a chemical in it to make it smell, so we can tell it's gas.( natural gas is ordorless.) if you don't know what something is, don't put it in your mouth.it could kill you or make you sick.(Einstein)
My peers are correct-but I felt like adding something interesting.Back in the old days before modern detection equipment-miners all ways kept canaries aroundThey are hyper sensitive to gas which is naturally odorless,,,if the poor birds dropped dead they knew they hit gas.
I just moved from a place with a electric stove to a place with a gas stoveThe gas stove felt hot all the time and I was worried so I asked the maintenance man and he told me it was simply the pilot lightsI hadn't had a gas stove before so I wasn't sureSo I can say for 100% certainty now that no, electric stoves do NOT have pilot lights, there is no need as it just uses electricity to heat like your baseboard/small portable heaters do.
