I just had the same problem. I replaced the batteries and they chirped louder. I removed the batteries and they continued their chirping. The fact is they are all electronically linked together. So what you have to do is start replacing the smoke detectors until the chirping stops. The problem is defective detectors. I had a repairman come out and do this so I know that this is the problem. I have pets so they were all extremely distressed. One of my dogs is still at the babysitters house recovering. Two of them were so scared that they refused to come back into the house. I had to carry them in (even when the problem was solved they were still scared). They hid for hours until they finally realized there was no more noise and then they came out.
