Question:

Solid Axle swap from a junkyard?

I have a 1993 k1500 suburban that i want to switch the front end to a solid axle.I read that an old ford axle can fit onto a chevy‘s without much problem is this true? and what year/model would i have to search for? Thanks :)

Answer:

What is your plan for the truck? If it is just a street truck, a small axle will work. If you plan on doing any off roading / abuse of the truck i'd go with a Dana 44. If you are going to install a lift / larger off road tires, put a Dana 60 in it. The car manufacturer did not make the axle, so yes, an axle from fits the other. I am putting a Dana 60 out of a Dodge in my 1983 GMC, and all i need to do is move the spring perch on the axle over approx. 1/4 inch.
GMC and Ford? Somebody was on drugs.
Just about any Dana 44 front full size axle will fit under your Suburban. When looking, make sure the pumpkin is off set to the left (driver side) A lot of Fords have twin traction beam front axles that are not 1 piece. The F350 has a solid front Dana 55, 60 or 65. They have the pumpkin on the correct side You can pick up a rusty old K20 or 30 for less than $500. That would give you the axle, drive shaft, leaf springs and perches.
