Without seeing it, it's hard to know how much space you have to work with, or what the pipe diameters are. I would suggest the easiest fix would be to cut the galvanized pipe off right next to the weld with a pipe cutter. Thread the end (if you have access to a pipe threader) and use a compression fitting to seal the PVC pipe in (again, this depends on the diameter of the pipe).
fire hydrants (not kidding) my dad has a wall of fire hydrant pictures he took around NYC. Just take pictures of things that are numerous, but people tend to ignore because it would seem useless take pictures of things you have never thought of before. how about things like different doorknobs?
