Do you have a fire extinguisher?!
They do not make a constant monitor for consumer use for propane. That is why the put the smell in it. If you suspect a leak, then call out the gas company or a hvac contractor with a gas leak detector. Be sure though to get carbon monoxide detectors for the home.
If you have ordered a crate engine it is designed with the right cam for the best power in that rpm range. Depending on your intentions, you need to match the cam, intake, heads and headers for the power you want and the amount of RMPs you plan to turn. If you already have your plans, call someone like Comp. Cams. Give them the bore, stroke, head size, intake, carb, and type of car (weight) and they will grind you a cam for your application. As for the type on camThe hydraulic is the least maint. The soild and roller need adjusting occasionally.
At work whenever we are cutting or brazing with a torch or using spark producing tools, there must be a fire extinguisher and a person to keep watch for fire. Haven't had to put one out yet.
A propane leak you should be able to smell. No detector is needed. A carbon monoxide detector is a good thing to have as well, but it does not detect propane gas.
