Question:

Spring Rate Question?

How is spring stiffness calculated? Is is it determined by the thickness of the actual coil or how ever many coils it may have for one spring? Pretty much im asking since i don‘t fully yet understand the suspension system 100% in specifics, just the basics such as what shocks and bump-stops do. Both car and RC car hobby :)

Answer:

It has to do the the thickness of the coil, the type of material used, more than the raw number of windings. Some springs look identical , but have very different compression and rebound rates. Shocks are meant to dampen the harmonics of spring rebound. Bump stops are to limit damage by avoiding metal to metal contact on full suspension travel. Torsion bars and leaf springs have differing dynamics than coil springs also.
