steel is used in domestic heating systems (UK) what is the long and short term perfomance?

Answer:

It depends on what type of system you are asking about and which component are in question. My system has a air handler that contains the air blower, furnace heater exchanger and burners and the evaporator coil for the air conditioning system. The exterior case is steel and is still in good condition after 35 years of service. The burners have been replaced on at about 35 years of service due to corrosion. The heat exchanger developed cracks after about 10 years of service and was replaced. The evaporator coil is a combination of copper and aluminum. It was replaced after 10 years of service. If one has a hot water heating system, there is a different set of problems and I have no experience with that type of system. The same goes for steam heat.
