Question:

subaru legacy transmission question?

Hello. I have a 1996 subaru legacy all wheel drive 4 door sedan. Lately my transmission has been shifting hard and slipping every once in a while. I talked to a friend about possibly putting some lucas transmission slip in it and he said not to do that, and to try getting my transmission fluid changed instead. My question is, if I go to a shop what exactly should I ask them to do? Any suggestions? Should I try anything more than a transmission fluid change?

The following steps go in sequence from the cheapest you can try that might work to the costliest that will work. That's the only correct path to follow. 1. Get your transmission fluid changed out and have them install a new filter. 2. Drive this a week or so and notice any changes. 3. If that didn't work, go back and tell them you want to try the no-slip additive. 4. Drive this a week or so and notice any changes. 5. If that did not work, go to an independent transmission shop that is recommended to you by a good mechanic. In other words, the place he would go. 6. Rebuilt transmission for your car will run $2,600 or so and that's a very good price. When the transmission guys have it, you may luck out and find out just the TCM transmission control module needs replacement. But I doubt it. The fact is the thing is most likely history. That's why it's OK to try the no-slip additive. But even if no-slip works for awhile, you will still need a replacement a short time down the road.
