Question:

Swapping exhaust system from Ford Probes?

I have a ‘96 Ford Probe that is missing the middle part of the exhaust system. I have the opportunity to purchase a ‘95 Probe and swap out the exhaust. How ‘practical‘ is it to do this with the help of another guy? Are any special tools required?(I believe it would be disconnected from the engine, correct?)Thanks for any insight you can provide!!!

Answer:

To buy a whole car just for 1 exhaust pipe would be rather wasteful. Unless the other probe is extremely cheap, and you can sell it off for parts or part it out yourself afterwards you'd be spending more than if you just bought the pipe, or a performance cat-back system for that matter. The only exhaust pipe on a Probe that is hard to replace is the rear header on a GT. 4-cyl exhausts couldn't possibly be easier, and V6 is pretty easy outside of that one. If you want a stock exhaust, you would only change the pipe that's busted, it's broken into sections like this: Header Downpipe Catalytic converter Resonator Muffler and between each section will be a flange that bolts together with a gasket in the middle. When you replace the pipe, replace the gasket on each side of it with a new one. If you decide to buy a whole other car for the pipe, cross reference the part #s of the pipes on autozone or somewhere to make sure they're the same first as I know that a Borla exhaust for a '95 GT and a '96 GT are different lengths. Sorry if that's confusing, tried to pack as much info into as short a reply as possible.
Depending on if the engines are the same, it is possible. Depending on what is actually missing, you won't need to take out the whole exhaust. The exhaust system is put together in sections, and is not usually one solid part.
