Question:

Taking 2 vitamins with 100% DV Iron?

I am going to start taking two vitamins: One multi-vitamin, and a B-50 vitamin. They both have 100% daily value of Iron, and I read that it is bad to get too much iron. Should I still be OK? I don't get any iron in my diet, but I'm just trying to be sure.

Answer:

How is it possible that you get no iron in your diet? That would mean you eat no greens, no beans, no nuts etc. Eat normal food and you won't need vitamins
I don't think you'll have an issue. However, doesn't your multivitamin cover B-vitamins? It seems like if you take a good multivitamin you should be covered. Also, many cereals contain iron. Multigrain cheerios has 100% DV of iron and B12.
Too much iron is toxic for humans - especially the type of iron that comes in pill form. If I were you, I'd alternate the pills and not take both in one day. Always, our goal as humans should be to consume the appropriate amounts of essential vitamins and minerals through our food. It is most easily absorbed that way. Here are some iron-rich foods you might want to consider adding to your diet: collard greens, spinach, kidney beans, black strap molasses, raisins, broccoli, and lima beans. In order to assist your body in fully absorbing the iron, steer clear of tea, coffee, alcohol and dairy products. Those inhibit the iron from getting into your system. To increase the iron absorption, eat a good source of vitamin C about a half hour before of a half hour after your iron-rich meal. I hope that helps!
