Question:

The burning of copper?

I am at an understanding burning copper will move the electrons of the atom to a level of energy where they would give off a green light.I have copper wire and I've done this on a bunsen burner, before. How hot would the flame need to be to excite the electrons enough? I have tried increasing surface area etc. but can't get it to burn green with an ordinary lighter.

Answer:

Firstly, the copper they use to burn is ether part of a compound in which it burns. Secondly, Burning copper can be very hazardous. Do it in a vented area. Thirdly, It should be it's hottest, I do not think a normal lighter would go that hot, because normal lighters have a max 30 second burning wartning on the sides, So you should try a candle or something.
try a small torch that you would use for sodering
