Question:

The Mazdaspeed3 has a brace over the cowl, alongside the transmission tunnel and in the rear.?

If this samething were done to a Mazda3 would it improve the rigid structure towards better handling? If so how would it influence the existing suspension system‘s handling characteristics? Would the car be made substantially heavier?

Answer:

The mazda 3 has very good handling anyway. Never drove a speed3, nor a hatch 3. I own a 2007 sedan 3, and I love the handling of it. However, adding that would improve the rigidity of the chassis, and it would have a potential of understeerJust like adding a strut bar does. Not to mention the added weight.
The idea is to improve handling of the car. I doubt very much that it is on there with out reason. believe me if Mazda could delete a single bolt on a car they (and any other manufacture) would do it. Under steer and over steer are conditions that are dependent on drivers perception of handling. While I might feel that a car is handling perfect another other drivers may say it under steers or over steers. As for being a Mazdaspeed addition, that I have no idea about.
These braces improve structural rigidity. It is all about handling. The braces add minimal wieght. Improving structural rigidity allows the suspension to its job, while reducing the influence of the chassis bending.
