We are in the process of getting estimates for installing new counter tops and cabinets in our kitchen. We would like to find out the pros and cons of both options. On the cabinet box construction the installer will use plywood pre-finished.Looking for suggestions

For comparison of wood box cabinets look at a cut view showing the construction of the following: 1. box sides *are they chipboard with wood veneer or plywood 2. Drawer fronts *solid wood,veneer,dovetail 3. Box bottoms *same 4. Suspension system for drawers *full extension 5. Cabinets fronts * all solid wood,veneer. Just type in brand of cabinets in yahoo search and then go to their website to see how cabinets are constructed. Many brands of cabinets have different levels of quality. Plastic laminate counter tops are the most economical. Brands available are Formica, Wilsonart,Nevamar. These are best made by a cabinet top shop for best quality. There are many edge styles now available for the Plastic Laminate. Whatever you do get the contract for your cabinets and countertops in writing with an exact price. The contract should state the brand and style of cabinet, it should list each cabinet by size and he/she should enclose a isometric drawing showing where each cabinet will go. The brand of plasitc laminate with color and # should appear on the contract. Same for solid surface/granite tops. Should state that he is to remove all old cabinets/tops/sink and dispose of. He will have a little plumbing to do in re-installing existing kitchen sink or putting in a new one. Remember to ask all your questions before signing the contract, and have all concerns listed on the contract such as clean up, if and how long you will be without a kitchen sink? Where are the new cabinets going to be stored prior to installation? Is work needed on the backsplash behind the countertops? Is there a dishwasher to contend with? Good Luck
