If an alarm went off while a thief was actually tampering with the vehicle, he/she would surely run off immediately, thereby saving the vehicle's owner from the inconvenience of having the vehicle or vehicle contents stolen. In this context, a car alarm performs its intended purpose. I can't imagine any thief having the courage/determination to proceed with his crime once the alarm had started sounding.

no one with any kind of brain would break into an armed car, i have never heard of this happening to be honest, so its a good deterrant in the first place, just like how no one breaks into a marked alarmed house.
I live in NYC and although I have had the hell annoyed out of me by these alarms, I have never seen or heard about them actually helping to foil a thief. As a matter of fact, they have been shown to be so impotent, as well as a public nuisance, that they have fallen out of favor in large metropolitan areas. If I moved back to the suburbs or to a rural area they might be effective.
