Question:

tile or linoleum for kitchen and bathroom?

I‘m on a tight budget but some people say tile is better I dont know which is best and will last longer and easy to maintain Any ideas what to do?

Answer:

tile in the bathroom it will hold up better against water linoleum is fine for the kitchen
tile is more expensive in the long run. Each tile doesn't cost that much but you have to install subflooring for ceramic tile. The total floor to bear the weight has to be at least 1 inch thick. Lino is warmer and easy to maintain. Myself I would tile if I had the money but would settle for a nice lino that looked like tile if cost was a factor as you stated.
How long do you want it to last? If you are 70 don't bother putting tons o cash in it. If you plan to live in your house a while then put whatever you want to live with. I changed the lino in the baths to tile - wish I had spent the money in the beginning. I had more problems with the caulking around the tub with the lino. Have tile in the kitchen - a bowl of ice cream dropped from counter height ends up looking like an armadillo on the highway at rush hour - you don't even get one bounce from you dishes. On the other hand a knife dropped on lino will land tip first and that one little spot collects dirt - and there will be more of those little holes that appear when no one is looking.
Tile looks better, but linoleum is cheaper. Linoleum can bubble up too. I pulled up my living room carpet and have nothing but the hard wood floor now, it needs finished or something else put down, but I don't have the money right now, I'm just waiting to get enought money to put down some laminate wood. You could wait and save for tile or just go with the linoleum if you want it done right away. Good luck!
you did not specify, ceramic tile or V.C.T(vinyl composition tile) ?. as a flooring installer the cheapest over all installatin would be the vinyl in both rooms, then the v.c.t., then the ceramic tile . vinyl would be the easiest to care for, most vinyl sheetgoods have a high sheen for a nowax finish just damp mop and your done. spills pool on it instead of finding cracks to seep into like w/ tile. fairly easy to install with minimal materials(vinyl, underlayment, something to fill the cracks between the under layment , i use dry wall mud, and glue). V.C.T. over wood floors cracks within a couple of years and takes work to maintain w / stripping and waxing. ceramic tile you have grout lines to keep clean to maintain an even look to your floor plus in the higher traffic areas the finish gets wore off and dull looking, then you get to have a pro reglaze or replace. plus it can get quite costly to replace broken or chipped ceramic tiles. down the road easiest to replace the vinly. to me money is money and dont care which i install for a customer. but at home i'd go w/ the vinyl.
