Question:

Toyota RAV4 states that it has anElectronic On-Demand 4-wheel drive does it start from front or rear to 4WD?

a bg question here is does the 2006 rav4 generally operate in front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

Answer:

Usually for these kind of vehicles it usually operates on front wheel drive because front wheel drive give better amount of traction most of the time than rear wheel drive. Plus the RAV4 engine is installed transversely, a typical installation for front wheel driven cars, so it makes sense to drive the front wheels because its simpler to the system. However other all wheel drive system such as those in previous generation Nissan Skyline offer more torque to the rear, although they still drive the front wheel, most of the power goes to the rear wheel. This is because the engine is install horizontally which makes driving the rear wheel easier on the engine and since the nature of the car is sporty, an rear wheel drive cars provide better feel and handling ability that a front wheel drive. You can imagine a sport car like the Skyline to drift, but you won't seen any RAV4 owners drifting their cars anytime soon.
FWD until slippage is detected then power gets sent to the rear wheels as well, automatically.
