Question:

Transmission issues /2001 Volkswagen Jetta?

My car shifts really crazy on some days, going into reverse first when I put it in drive, or giving a hard nock sound when I shift it into reverse and delays when I put it in drive and once I get on the road, it drives like a dream. But then some days, I will see the RPM shoot down to like 1000 and jump to 3000 and I will feel my car jerking. I was thinking that a transmission flush/fill would solve this problem. Do you think I should go ahead and do it or does it sound like my transmissions problems are so bad , that if I change the fluid, I could possibly cause more damage and find my self without a vehicle. What should I do? Some days I love this car, but other times I feel like I have a piece of junk

Answer:

The 01M transmission that VW used in this year is known to fail around 100k miles or so. I doubt a transmission flush will help. By the way you must use the VW approved transmission fluid or else serious damage will occur. I hope that you or a previous owner didn't take it to a simple jiffy lube and have the oil changed out with the wrong fluid. Expect to replace the transmission with a new one for around $4-5k. I don't suggest rebuilding it as most rebuilds will fail sooner than if you had simply gone with a new one.
