Question:

Transmission problem help!!? Anyone?

I have a 1999 Chevy 1500 4X4 350 Vortec 4L60E automatic transmission and its leaking fluid out of the seal at the tourqe converter or is it the front transmission seal? Need help fixing it. How much will the seal cost? What is the name for the seal? If I don‘t do it myself how much will a auto shop charge me? Any advice will help please need help!!

Answer:

make sure its not leaking from the pan gasket before you do anything. A pan gasket leaking us usually a sign that the transmission needs service. Usually the mechanic replaces the filter and a new gasket for the pan and its a done deal. If the fluid is leaking from the bell housing and coming out the inspection plate on the bell housing you have a major problem. That seal does not leak under normal circumstances and if it is there are usually a lot more expensive issues to go along with it. What is the mileage on the transmission now? GM had a problem with millions of weak transmissions they held up ok but once past a 130 thousand miles it was any bodies guess how long they would last Replacing a seal is not going to solve the problem in most cases if the tranny is old. you may need to bite the bullet and rebuild the transmission to fix the problem. Get it inspected by a competent transmission shop ( just do not use ammco they are the worst tranny shop in the USA and have thousands of complaints lodged against them for shoddy work. I am in a wheel chair and they even ripped me off a for a total rebuild but that is not what they did and right after my rebuild the owner sold the shop to some other greedy A hole who would not honor the warranty. .
they are both the same seal dont know prices but not something you can do by reading it
