Whenever I start my car in the morning when it‘s cold outside, and I change my transmission to drive or reverse it acts like it is in neutral and I can‘t move. This doesnt‘ happen when its warm outside and it does start working after I wait a bit. So my question is : Is this a real problem and can it be fixed?
Transmissions are like opinions, their all different. But the basics remain the same. You wrote that things change, when the whether changes. Colder temperatures cause fluids to gel. Their designed to adjust to temp. changes, but they do wear out. Automatic transmissions are complicated, but all we need to worry about is your problem. It won't go when it's in gear because the fluid isn't getting where it should, but it will when it warms up, or it's a warm day. That tells me you need to have the transmission fluid and filter changed. If you never did that before, it's time to do it now. It's a normal thing to do and it will make your trans shift better, when it's cold, and make it last longer, in general. Find out who dose trans repair in your area. If you know a mechanic, ask who they would use to service a transmission for them. Most shops send their trans work to someone that specializes in just transmission repairs. Your car goes to a regular shop and your mechanic removes the trans and sends it to the expert. The experts only work on transmissions, not the whole car. If you go to a trans shop and there are a bunch of cars in the lot, keep looking. The reason there are so many cars, is because they can't fix cars right the first tine. Transmission shops that have too many cars, just hanging around. Are most likely not good at what they do.
Check you transmission fluid level. Trans fluid expands as it gets warmer so if youre just slightly low and then it heats up itll let you move. It could be other things but this is what I would check first.
did you check it while running and after going through your gears to let the fluid move around as it should be? if you check it with engine off it will show over full so it might actualy be low on fluid if u checked improperly. not trying to be rude just saying since some people don't actualy remember that. but in a general sense that is bad cause the bands are slipping at first it will wear out fast that way. my best solution is to get a transmission filter and fluid change. ur fluid might have all the nutrients in it burnt up so it needs replaced or filter is half clogged. and when if ur having this issue every day before you try to move switch it from park to whatever gear you want count to 10 seconds then go back to park and count to 10. then back to the gear you want and count to 10. that should get the fluid flowing before trying to take off. if u use both reverse and drive before take off then youll need to do it to both. but it sounds like its low on fluid or having issue getting fluid up right away. every time it slips those bands are wearing out more and more and faster. eventualy u will need a transmission if this continues.
