Question:

Transmission question?

What type of transmission was in a 1989 crown vic cop car? The motor is a 351 widsor. So what type of trans came with it?

Answer:

Look closely at the mounting, compare your old ones to the instructions, and then follow the instructions.
I think that's an AOD or AODE, the 4r70w came later.
It has an AOD. The AODE didn't come out until 1992.
An AOD transmission without a manual '1' selection. On police package equipped vehicles, a manual '2' selection is the lowest available selection. These vehicles came with a different valve body configuration, along with heavier duty clutch packs with extra plates, to better withstand the rigors of police use over the civilian version Crown Vics. The 351W engines were equipped with the 2 bbl VV carburetors, while 302 engines were equipped with SEFI. Police package vehicles also came equipped with auxillary power steering, transmission fluid, and engine oil coolers. Speedometers on police package equipped vehicles were 0 to 140 mph (0 to 220 km/h in Canada) certified calibration. Hope this helps.
Different makes of cars have different attatchments. Your package should offer instructions. If they don't, look for an internet address and go there for instructions.
