Hi there Adhesive contaminants on the roller (like a rubber drum that transports the tape) can cause the tape to stick to it and it then drags it around roller. Alternatively if the grip of the rubber ring on the main drive wheel allows slippage then this difference will cause the tape to slacked , and then after forming a loop it gets chewed. Some tape chewing can be remedied with cleaning , but in old VCR machines it is likely that parts will need to be replaced.
so take the battery out or disconnect the wire snap before you clean it.
