As others have said, taking the MSF BasicRider course is the first thing you should do. They provide the bikes and helmets, you just need gloves, over-the-ankle footwear, long pants, long sleeved jacket and eye protection. It consists of a one night classroom session and a weekend's worth of riding. You ride on a starter bike (250cc or less) and learn from the very basics. In fact, your first riding lesson is straddling the bike and walking it down to the riding area. You learn shifting, clutch control, turning and stopping. When I took the course, I had never ridden a motorcycle before or even used a clutch, but when I was done, I was a fully licensed rider. The cost varies by state, but in some states, if you pass the course you can have the written and/or riding tests waived. You can also get insurance discounts for passing the course.
Oh yea that used to happen all the time in my college dorm. I lived in Florida so lighting used to shut the power off all the time and force the fire alarms to go off, which sucked cuz we had to exit the building in the middle of a lightning storm.
I installed a Viper 791XV (remote start, keyless, passlock bypass, the works) in my '05 Impala, which has basically the same wiring as the monte. I didn't trust some pimple-faced 17 year old geek at circuit city, best-buy, or some audio store with my wiring. With a little research and some electronics knowledge, it's pretty easy. I'd start with a vehicle wiring diagram at the Bulldog Security link below and the installation instructions for your alarm. Most of the wires for the locks, lights, trunk, and doors are connected to various wires on the body module (near the e-brake, with several pink and grey harnesses on it). Good luck! Edit: If you're not familiar with electronics, you may actually want to take it in. I forgot I had to wire in some diodes and resistors, which can be tricky. Depending on the alarm you may HAVE to have the diodes, or your alarm will go off when the body module goes into power save mode (lights go off even with door open, etc.).
