Heavy Metal is the root of all evil of sorts. It is heavy metal in it's most basic form. Examples: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions Glam Metal/Hair Metal is a more mainstream form of heavy metal, with heavy elements of rock and pop. Fans of glam/hair metal were/are often seen as posers by more traditional metal fans. Examples: Motley Crue, Winger, Ratt Thrash Metal is heavy metal combined with punk elements and a heavy emphasis on speed and general heaviness. Examples: Megadeth, Slayer, Dark Angel Black Metal is a more extreme version of thrash metal, often with the speed amped up and the vocals ranging from high pitched shrieks to low growls. Satanic themes are most prevalent in this sub genre, though they are to an extent in most other sub genres Examples: Mayhem, Burzum, Venom Doom Metal is metal centered mostly around being as slow and heavy as possible. Varying lyrical themes, from the occult to drugs. Examples: Candlemass, Trouble, Electric Wizard Hope that helps.
Glam metal is more like hard rock, with some pop elements. Black metal is an extreme sub genre of metal in which guitars are highly tuned and include screeched vocals and growls with a fast pace and heavy blast beat drumming. Black metal lyrics are commonly related to darkness and have Satanic and Antichristian themes. Thrash metal is metal which includes vocals which are sort of harsh or aggressive. And played at a really fast pace with amazing leads and solos. Doom metal is gothic type of metal which includes clean or growled vocals and horror gothic based music. Lyrics are often based on death and fiction. Hair metal i've not heard of... O.o must be probably something to do with having long hair or something. Heavy metal is a heavier version of common hard rock. Older bands usually are classified as heavy metal who had an inspiring effect on the metal scene. It sounds quite similair to thrash metal.
Glam Metal is garbage Black Metal usually has high tuned guitars and high pitched shrieks as vocals. Lyrics are usually Satanism themed. Thrash Metal has heavily distorted guitars and seems to be about war a lot of the time I've never listened to Doom Metal, so I cannot answer. See what I said about Glam. The same thing applies to Hair Metal Heavy Metal is stuff like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. I don't know how to describe it in any other way.
