Question:

What are passenger tires?

I was looking at tires for my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and found performance tires and passenger tiresand now I‘m confused.what‘s the difference?

Answer:

Passenger tires are just normal tires you would use for regular driving.performance tires are better and are used if you are going to do heavy driving, maybe in harsh weather conditions or off roading.
Some of the answers that have been givin to you are wrong. Your jeep has what is the recommended tire size on the drivers side door. I beleive it is the same size as my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo P215/75/R15. The P stands for passenger tire. The differance between the the P and LT is the sidewall streght. It is not recommened to put a LT tire on most SUVs due to when you put a LT tire on it stiffens the ride and makes the suv more likely of a roll over in a emergancy quick turn situation. Also the ride of the Jeep will be alot more rough due to the tire not absorbing the bumps in the road as well in a LT tire. As far as a high performance tire you should not need this due to that it is for speed and better corner handeling during corners. The rubber on the tire is softer and wears alot faster. If you are concerned about traction you will find there is alot of differnat types of tread patterns advaliable for your Jeep that will fit your needs in a P tire. To the person that was talking about the problem in the Explorer tires it was not due to the tire having a P rating it was due to the tire was manufactured improperly and the tire was comming apart due to this. Again on most suvs LT tires are a roll over hazard in a top heavy vehical. Do some research on what you need out of a tire; do not allways take the person who is selling the tires advice. They may be trying to sell you a tire that costs more and is not what you need. Good Luck.
Passenger tires are tires made for small to medium sized vehicles and are made for stock and all season application. Because of this, they are not suited to the jeeps we all drive. Performance tires are tires made with higher speed ratings and for dedicated purposes. In your case, you need light truck/SUV tires. These tires are built specifically for our kinds of vehicles (Jeeps) and are best suited to fit our daily-driving needs. However, when you do get your tires, consider what kind of environment you live in, what kind of driving you do, and what your stock tire size is. These designs have tradeoffs including traction (both on and off the road for various conditions), highway ride quality, and performance. In terms of traction, designs range from HT (highway tread) to AP (all-purpose) to AT (all-terrain) to MT (mud terrain) in order of aggressive tread design. Highway ride quality diminishes as the tread design becomes more aggressive. IE: The more knobs on the tire (such as on mud tires) the rougher the ride on paved road. If the weather is pretty good year round (almost california-ish) then a good set of all-season tires will work great. But if you are in a place like colorado or utah, you may consider something a bit more suited for colder weather and snow. (Just to note, The more siping the tire has, the better. Pliability for most tires' performance diminishes below 40 degrees. That translates into less traction) If you need a good source for info, call the dealership and find out what tires were supplied for your jeep when it was first new. this will give you a clue as to what tires to get.
