Install one of the newer style CO detectors just outside of your bedroom(s) (the newest models auto-reset the detector section - reducing false alarms). These are now required by most current building codes and are an excellent idea for safety. Nothing wrong with rebuilding a 25 yo boiler. New ones are very expensive. I'd be tempted to have the rebuild done asap . . . but I'm a bit gunshy on CO issues as I have had 2 poisoning level events in my life (both boiler related)
I would install a carbon monoxide dectector but other thatn that go with what the furnace man says. Usually they try and sell you stuff you dont need not the other way around
I think that time frame is about right. They used both for a while. But around that time was when we were buying large amounts of pipe from Japan. A lot of that pipe was made from recycled metal and it wasn't until later they found it was of poor quality and was rusting and corroding faster than pipe made here. So many homes were being re-plumbed with copper. Then they also decided the lead content was too high in galvanized pipe so copper became the standard.
