The orignial lighting of the torch used to attract birds. Sometimes dead birds of over 1000 species would have to be cleaned off of the torch platform in one day. the green color isn't grime. Its the natural patina that copper sheeting takes from exposure to the elements. it's oxidation, but unlike rust, it adds to the protective qualities of copper sheeting. It will last virtually forever, which is why many large buildings are roofed with copper sheeting. Liberty's head was on display in Central Park to raise funds to complete her pedestal, back in the 1880's

Which one? There are two, and the architecht only refered to one as his lady, of course, the one in France. A French daredevil once tried to land on top of the one in America, and his parachute got caught on the flame; so three officers had to go up and rescue him, the torch was not designed to support that much weight, but they were all safe after the ordeal, and the rather embrassed frenchman was hauled away in handcuffs under the charge for causing a breach in national security, and if only his parachut would have torn, and he dropped to the concrete pedastle below, I am sure he would have recieved a Darwin award.
