not too close I think. I can barely go outside now a days without gettin burnt.
It really depends on what the space ship is made of, what part of the sun it is approaching, sunspot activity, etc etc etc. I don't think there is a definitive answer.
I mean it sounds like a good idea but there should be a bit more depth to it, how about a boy that is killed that forever picks on him in the school, and he now has mixed feelings about the massacre, it just sounds a bit cheesy the plot i mean. And maybe you should make the message that even when these nasty things happen and a lot of people are sad high schools can be mean to certain students and some people will just be so depressed that they actually wish it was them that took the place of one of the victims !
A spaceship made out of a highly reflective material would have the best chance of getting close to the sun. And if it were made out of a material highly resistant to melting, you could conceivably drive right into the surface. Once you're not just dealing with radiation and heat it a different story. The gases and thermonuclear reactions of the sun would take any ship apart (unless you had some of those nifty deflector shields from TNG).
