Question:

What are the advantages of a Bias Ply tire?

i was looking for some truck tires for my jeep and bias tires seem to be popular when it comes to these big tires. whats the advantage of a bias tire vs. a radial? and why are bias tires not street legal in some states?

Answer:

Hi Jay. I disagree with you about Bias tires being illegal in some states, that's totally untrue. If your Jeep is an older one, (70s and earlier), than bias ply tires are your best bet. The suspension wasn't designed for radials back in those days. Most radial tires are not built for off road use, as you can knock a hole in the sidewall from just about anything. Check with your tire dealer for the application for your needs. Be sure to tell them what you are planning to do. Contact me via here for advice on which tire to buy.
Radials are an overall superior tire in wear, performance and safety. In contrast, bias ply types are less expensive. Producing bias-ply tires allows for a larger tire at lower cost, making them far more practical for off-road enthusiasts. Haven't heard of bias ply tires being illegal anywhere UNLESS they're not rated for road use (e.g., monster truck tires).
