Question:

What are the best materials to make a thermal protection system for a small rocket?

I need to make a small space capsule for a school science project. We have to make a way to prevent it from burning upwe have to make a Thermal Protection System. We can make it out of a copper sheet, aluninum foil, aluninum, and a peoce of plain window screen. any ideas for for an order or shapes of materials? oh yea everything is attached to a bolt that is glued into a block of wood and it has to stay up for 4 minutes

Answer:

That's a great ideaespecially with all the storms we have had over the summer. Tesla created lightning through his works. Maybe a reversed Tesla coil experiment would work? Lightning rod on top of the capacitor, which then feeds to a tightly wound inductor, which then puts a huge magnetic field across a flat pancake coil. Basically, a step down transformer. The current surge would be huge though. Might fry things. As far as storage, you'd have to create some sort of capacitor which can handle such a huge spike of power. Huge capacitor, the size a building with perhaps an air core. Or something smaller and more advanced, if possible. What about a rechargeable battery system, like Lithium (of course this is probably more of a joke than to be taken serious). If you can take the lightning strike and divide it up into safer power packs, which are then safely stored away in capacitors or battery cells, you've got it made.
