Question:

WHAT ARE THE CONDITION FOR RUSTING OF IRON?

we have a project on rusting of iron as a phenomenon in nature and we are asked to find the condition experiment to investigate the rusting of iron, the effect and the methods of prevention of rusting of iron so how can i get all this imformation and i hope you are willing to help

Answer:

Iron rust is caused by the oxidation of iron to iron oxide. Therefore metallic iron is converted to ionic iron through the loss of electrons. The conditions therefore involve iron in the presence of oxygen.
You need conditions that promote galvanic action - a reaction between dis-similar metals in the presence of an electrolyte. The impurities in the iron cause small isolated galvanic cells all over the surface of the iron, usually in the presence of water - the electrolyte.
