Answer:

The whole point of speed bumps is to lower the speed of drivers, not for people to drive around them. If he has a huge truck he should be able to get over the bumps with no issue. If he doesn't want to driver over them, I would suggest it was because he was going too fast.
I agree regular fire alarms do not alert to gas or fumes or CO2 only smoke/steam check your alarm- if it is also a CO2 detector get out! But either way call the Gas company and have them come take a look also- if they are 'hard wired' not battery operated, it could be your electrical system an electrician may be needed!
Lauren, You've gotten good advice so far - but you need a bigger screwdriver. Again, look closely at your second picture: the one with the interior polished brass trim removed. (Excellent picture.) Look at the ring around the holes where the trim screws go in. The ring has two notches. That ring is part of the two-stage screw that another poster described. You need a screwdriver wide enough to bridge the hole, and fit into both notches at once. Unscrew it; the whole ring will turn. The ring is NOT part of the lock. It's part of another screw. Take out both screws and the two halves of the lock should come out of the door.
try turning the outer brass ring to disassemble or take the photos to Lowe's or the HoDepot and visit the lock center for a look-see at a new D-bolt to figure how to take it apart
