The queen of wood is hickory,having the highest btu of any wood,and makes the best long burning fire and the hottest too,and great for cooking on the coals of,with a little green wood,or the bark to flavor it up nicely.Then there are the other hardwoods,like oak,and maple,and they make good hot fires with long lasting coals as well,the softwoods,like the pines burn fast and hot,but leave resinous deposits you don't want in your food,and they make pine tar on the pot hard to clean.Birch is classified as a hardwood,but only if slightly seasoned,then it tends to rot quickly,and is inferior,except for it's bark,which makes an excellent fire starter.and is waterproof off the log.(Birchbark canoes)The worst is elm,hard to split,and hard to start a fire with.Ash is a good all around firewood,easy to split,and burns well.with less soot and no resins.
