Question:

What color is iron in its elemental state?

I would presume it be silver but if so, if something rust its brown. So what color is iron in its elemental state. Is it clear?I was in lab and I mixed, Iron(3+) which was clear in the test tube with KI which was clear as well and got a medium brown color.Whats going on?

Answer:

Pure crystal Iron is shiny, bright white/silver but the reduced filings are dark gray. It turns reddish with moisture/corrosion.
First off, Kl doesn't exist. I assume that you mean KCl, potassium chloride. The physical appearence of iron substances can vary immensely depending on what it is bonded to. The new substance created, Iron III Chloride (FeCl3), would probably have a much different color than another iron compound, such as Iron III Fluoride or Iron III Oxide. They all have different properties that don't necessarily directly correspond to their components.
