Question:

what could this really be and how much?

Dodge Caravan 2003Code P0456Check engine light came on, got it checked at Auto Zone. Said it was EVAP small leak detected.ExplanationThe ECM has detected a large leak in the EVAP system during a system monitor test.1. Defective, loose or missing fuel cap (So we replaced it)2. Evap canister broke, hose cracked or not connected3. Purge or vent solenoid defective4. Vacum leak at engineWe fixed the gas cap but the same code is coming up.They said it could be fixed by us but they might not have any parts we need. There not sure which one it is.Will it mess up my car if we just leave it alone? How much would this cost to fix? What all could it be?

Answer:

Check the vent solenoid. Sometimes the filter on it will fill with dirt, and cause it to get stuck open. If thats the case, it will need to be replaced
The evap system capures fuel that is evaporating from the gas tank, and allow it to re-enter the tank to be burnt. Its only there because laws require it to be so that fuel does not evaporate into the atmosphere. While you should make efforts to fix the problem, it will in no way effect the life or performance of your engine, you may lose fuel from your gas tank while it is sitting, and you wont pass an emissions test come the next time you need to take one.
