Question:

What do brackets mean in polynomials?

For example, In one of my reviews an answer was 2[(x^2 + 5)(x + 3)], But I don't know what the brackets are for. Can you tell me what brackets are used for in polynomials?

Answer:

The brackets mean that you are do do the multiplication inside the brackets first, then afterward multiply by 2. But since multiplication commutes there's no point to the brackets in this instance, since the result will be the same regardless of the order in which the factors are multiplied. So in this case 2[(x^2 + 5)(x + 3)] is exactly the same as 2(x^2 + 5)(x + 3) Some people might nest parentheses instead of using brackets, like this: 2((x^2 + 5)(x + 3)) with the same result.
