I'm a diesel mechanic. I work on large diesel engine vehicles. I do everything from engine and transmission work to air suspension systems, to hydraulics, to changing tires. Salary really depends on what part of the world you live in. In the northern US, you could be making 60k or more a year. In the south, you might struggle to make 25k. Then there is flat rate, where you get paid a percentage of the work you do for that day. There are technical schools out there, but they usually suck and cost a lot of money. In my opinion, the only way to become a good mechanic is to get your hands dirty. Hands-on experience is the most important part of this field of work, and you won't learn what you need to by looking in a book. Another thing to consider is the fact that vehicles are becoming increasingly technologically advanced. Even diesels are getting in line with the hybrid movement. If you want to go to mechanical school, go for hybrid. Trust me, it's the future of mechanics. There just aren't enough people out there who can work on hybrids; and it's things like that which are changing the game. Mechanics are old school. The new term is technician.
