Im no expert but based on what happened with our alarm, it would usually go off and act strangely when the battery is low, so I'm assuming it has to do with the amount of power it has remaining.
Probably the best course of action is to ask at the Toyota dealership. You don't have to get the work done there, but you ask if the wiring harness is good to go, and what all needs to be done. You will need the mechanism inside the doors, but you might be able to limit that to just the driver's door for your daughter to use it.
Not all smoke detectors function that way. Those that do use the alarm to signal when the battery has made contact with the battery terminals and is functioning properly.
