Question:

What does pressing charges actually do?

okay, so a few days ago my ipod was stolen in school. I manage to hunt and track down the kid who did it, but he claimed he doesn't have it anymore. I had him arrested and pressed charges against him. What does pressing charges actually do? and will i get compensation in anyway for my stolen property?

Answer:

When you filed a police report and he was arrested you probably agreed to prosecute. I don't know what the value of the iPod is but if it exceeds a certain value determined by your state laws it will be a felony. The police cannot get you any money for your loss but if they can trace it down to the current possessor they may be able to recover it and return it to you. If the person that accepted it from the thief knew it was stolen (and it can be proven) he may be charged with receiving stolen property.
Pressing charges means to bring an accusation against the suspect. (You PRESSED forward in your quest)
