Don't think there is, aside from function. Staff is used as help for walking or climbing, or used for magic stuff. Rod is a something to describe objects. A long cylinder usually.
High end video boards like to lock up when they overheat. Check that the cooling is adequate. Most forceware drivers allow you to monitor the junction temperature of the graphics controller. It should never go beyond a reasonable value, say 60C. The limit depends on the part, you might be able to find that online. If temperature is the issue, check that there is sufficient thermal paste between the heat sink and the GPU. Note also that too much thermal paste is also bad. It should cover the contact area of the part completely, but extra thickness just adds thermal resistance.
