Question:

What else should I have replaced along with my front axle?

I have a 2001 Saturn sedan which needs a tone ring. I was advised that I should go ahead and get a new front axle (since the tone ring is included) so I will. A separate symptom is a friction/grinding noise when I steer hard left or right. What is that? Can any labor be consolidated with the front axle labor?

Answer:

I would guess the grinding noise that occurs during a tight turn is the CV Joint. When you mention a new front axle, I assume a new CV Journal boot is included. Replacement isn't all that difficult, if you're a fair mechanic have a little help.
Always change both drive axles when doing them and it's probably due to the CV joints that noise and keep in mind it's not good hard in either direction bec its tough on the front end and sterring system especially. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way when buying drive axles a lot of the times a re-build is sold much cheaper and has the same lifetime warranty as a new one , just rem there is a core value too.
That is the noise of a axle bearing. when you get the axle changed you'll also need to replace the bearing and the rings that comes with the new bearing. BRILLIANT!!!!
