Is there any truth in this?
You know those islands in parking lots that people fill with gravel? First, make sure you know what quartz looks like, then look in those. Quartz is pretty prominent in most of the rocks used for gravel. If you need a chunk of pure quartz, I'd say going to a hippy shop.
Usually quartz are used in in making watches. You may also check some jewelry pawnshop and jewelry store. But i bet it will cost you a lot.
